The idea of vertical licenses was first put into place by Colorado in 1994.

Vertical driver‘s licenses (or state identification cards) are issued to young people under the age of 21.

In most states, the orientation of a driver’s license for persons under the age of 21 is vertical while a driver’s license for those over the age of 21 is horizontal.
